Survey of Returning Male Students.
Plotsky, Frances; And Others
A study was developed to determine a profile of the University of Texas (U.T.) at Austin returning male student, his purpose for returning to higher education, his concerns related to his role as a student, and his preferences for programs. A questionnaire was prepared and mailed to 407 newly-admitted male Austin residents, 25 years old or over. Twenty-five percent of the questionnaires were returned. The questionnaire obtained demographic data, financial and employment data, military service information, period of interrupted study, academic information, concerns, and program needs. Survey results indicated (1) most are married, white, ages 25-29, with no children; most were Vietnam veterans; (2) they are career-oriented--76% checked this as the reason for returning to school; (3) financial concerns including budgeting for education and living on a reduced income were predominant; (4) 37% listed their income as $5,000 or below--66% listed veterans' benefits as a major income source; (5) 72% were pursuing advanced or professional degrees; and (6) 65% requested programs on U.T. student services, 40% requested a session on getting around U.T., and only 11% requested marriage counseling. Six recommendations were made. For example, the first recommendation was that school aid for those experiencing financial difficulties should be explored or established.
