Assistive Technology Solutions for IEP Teams.
Purcell, Sherry L.; Grant, Debbie
This guide was developed with the recognition of the growing need for school districts to provide access to the general education curriculum for students with special needs and to align assistive technology (AT) with performance requirements of the curriculum. The AT solutions presented represent changes in materials and instructional strategies and are built on concepts related to accommodations as defined in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. The emphasis is on the low end of the technology spectrum and the student population focus includes students in grades K-3 who have mild to moderate cognitive processing impairments, fine motor disabilities, and are nonverbal. Curriculum standards within each content area are presented in a chart format that includes the grade and standard, an analysis of the access issues related to performance of the standard, suggestions for AT solutions, and sample Individualized Education Program goals. Content areas include reading (fluency, reading comprehension, and literary response and analysis), writing (writing strategies and writing applications), written and oral English-language conventions (grammar, punctuation, and spelling), and listening and speaking. Appendices include information on different AT devices, vendor information, instructional technology, Web sites, and federal legislation. (CR)
