The Educational Problems of the Turkish Citizens Living in Switzerland in the Process of Adjustment to Europe
Ari, Asim
International Journal of Educational Reform, v16 n2 p203-217 Spr 2007
Every society experiences migration and influxes of immigrants. The most common reasons for migration include political and economic obligations as well as wishing access to better educational opportunities. Although the concept of migration is as old as human history, Turkish society encountered the concept after World War II. Two million Turkish workers migrated to approximately 30 countries to find better lives. Switzerland was one of those countries. In this study, the author examines the educational problems of the Turkish citizens in Switzerland, the most significant anxieties that they have for their children, their satisfaction levels of education, and related issues. The study was conducted in the canton of Basel-Stadt in Switzerland. The adjustment efforts of the Turks living in Switzerland are apparent. However, some educational problems have arisen. As defined by the parents who participated in the research, the serious problems include the treating of children differently just because they are Turks, they're not receiving the education that they deserve, anxiety for not receiving a good education, and their language problems when starting school. These problems require that the Ministry of Education in Basel-Stadt and its staff question the attitudes toward immigrants. Those who are not pleased with living in this country suffer more seriously from these problems. (Contains 7 tables.)
