Ellis Island and the Peopling of America: The Official Guide.
Yans-McLaughlin, Virginia; Lightman, Marjorie
This guide book helps to place the Ellis Island Museum (New York) and site within the context of the worldwide, continuing history of immigration. The guide views immigration as a continuing social process that brings people from one part of the world to another where they contribute the richness of their labor to their newly adopted home. Ethnic groups are represented in the guide's historical documents, bibliographies, and filmographies, with the focus on shared experiences of immigrants to the United States. The chapter titles include: (1) "Migration and Examples from World History" (discusses the ways immigration is organized and how it shaped U.S. history); (2) "Migration and the New World" (chronicles immigration to the United States, emphasizing Europe, Asia, Latin America, and Africa as places of origin from the Age of Exploration to the present); (3) "Ellis Island and After" (focuses upon immigration policy past and present and explains Ellis Island itself as an artifact of that policy); (4) "Documents" (a series of historical documents relating to or written by those who came to the United States along with learning activities and discussion questions); (5) "Resources" (describes how this guide may be used and offers a bibliography of teaching and other resources); and (6) "Films, Videos, and Filmstrips" (contains annotated listings of related films, videos, and filmstrips).
