A Program to Demonstrate the Uses of an Inexpensive Microfiche Reader, and the Resources of ERIC and Other Microform Information Collections. Final Report.
Svobodny, Dolly D.
In order for the ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center) microfiche and the MLA (Modern Language Association of America) abstract system to have maximum impact, it was felt that scholars and teachers would need to own their own microfiche readers and that the potential of microfiche must be demonstrated to this same audience. A low-cost reader (model PMR/50) commissioned by the U.S. Office of Education and developed by DASA Corporation was made available to the MLA for demonstration. The reader was shown at some 40 campuses and seven regional and national professional meetings. MLA staff demonstrated the reader, explained the proposed MLA abstract system, and displayed materials describing ERIC and MLA programs. Individual final evaluations of the demonstrations were submitted by each staffmember, and these are included in this report along with sample fiche of the MLA abstracts. MLA members favor a microfiche service and feel this type of publishing permits low-cost reproduction of materials. MLA members prefer positive to negative fiche, Diazo over Silver paper, and the COSATI format. Opinions on the DASA reader indicate the reader is liked but one in the $50 price range preferred unless it has microfiche and microfilm capabilities. Among the criticisms are that the reader has uneven light, screen sensitivity to dust, and a flimsy fiche carrier. (MT)
