An environmental investigation into how wind behaves is formulated in this unit for grades three through six. The thrust is to get students more aware of the environment in which they live, seeing how their lives are intertwined with all the elements. Specifically, knowing how the wind behaves may lead to a better understanding of how to behave while living with it. Activities are designed to provide a head start on solving some of the problems of living in the environment. It is asserted that if children can do fun things related to a large problem, they may become interested enough to continue learning about it. Thus, numerous games, both indoor and outdoor, introduce the unit followed by activities and investigations which measure the wind by gauges, show the effect of obstacles on the wind, map wind measurements, and explore winds beyond the schoolyard by use of balloons. Fifteen additional investigations for individuals to conduct out-of-class are explained in the back of the guide. Descriptions of objectives and methods, lists of required simple materials, and patterns for wind gauges combine to make this a complete unit for the teacher to use with a minimum of preparation. (BL)
