The Essential Components of Coach Training for Mental Health Professionals: A Delphi Study
Moriarity, Marlene Therese
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Sam Houston State University
Purpose. The purpose of this study was to discover how coach training experts define coaching and what they would identify to be the essential components of a coach training program for mental health professionals. Methods. A panel of nine experts, through an iterative Delphi process of responding to three rounds of questionnaires, provided definitions of coaching and identified essential components for a coach training program (courses, course content, coaching activities, and assessment). Data from the first round responses from the expert panel were analyzed using classical content analysis. The second and third rounds were more specific, seeking quantification of earlier results through rating and ranking techniques. Those components reaching the highest rating in Round 3, combined with the highest percentages in the second round, reached final consensus as essential components. Findings. Study results revealed a research-based definition for coaching and established a foundation for developing a coach training program. The results indicated a need for specific courses, content areas, activities, and assessments that coach training programs should include for effective coach training for mental health professionals. These essential coach training components for mental health professionals could be used to guide the development of coach training curriculum.
