Feelings, Body Changes and Stress. A Curriculum for Pre-Schoolers on Stress Education.
Humphrey, Gloria S.; Trotter, Jennie C.
The Pre-School Stress Relief Project (PSSRP) is a primary mental health and substance abuse prevention project developed to provide training, consultation and educational resources in stress management. The Project's goal is to enable teachers to instruct high risk pre-schoolers in developing positive coping skills for stress reduction in their lives by learning coping skills early. Although the project is aimed at high risk children, the program can be used to teach all young children positive coping skills for dealing with changes in their lives. The curriculum is divided into six lessons: (1) I am a good person; (2) feelings and you; (3) your body changes with stress; (4) good ways to get anger out; (5) deep breathing and relaxation; and (6) Yoga exercises. The format of each lesson is as follows: (1) topic; (2) general objective; (3) behavioral objective; (4) suggested time period; (5) materials needed; (6) equipment needed; (7) key words/glossary; (8) procedure; (9) video questions and answers; (10) suggested activities; and (11) resources. The lessons are followed by a section on resources which includes: follow-up activities; a bibliography on children and stress; albums and tapes; and children's prevention programs. (JD)
