Education and Training in Developmental Disabilities, v44 n1 p54-66 Mar 2009
Although menstrual care is among the most important skill areas for females with mild to moderate developmental disabilities to facilitate their independence, there is limited research examining this issue. The present study was designed to analyze the acquisition and maintenance effects of antecedent prompt and test procedure on teaching changing sanitary napkins on a doll to three young females with mild to moderate developmental disabilities. Generalization through multiple exemplar approach and social validity were also examined. A multiple probe design across participants was used in the study which consisted of baseline, intervention, probe, maintenance, and generalization sessions. All participants were able to acquire and maintain the skills taught to them, and generalize the acquired skills to various examples. Furthermore, the parents of the participants were very pleased with the study in general. The results are discussed and recommendations regarding future research and practice are raised in the article. (Contains 2 tables and 1 figure.)
