"Masterpiece" at 40: A Celebration
Cashion, Carol Jackson
English Journal, v100 n4 p15-19 Mar 2011
In 1971, the year that "Masterpiece Theater" premiered on WGBH, the public television station in Boston, the author's family lived in London for the summer. Her life that summer had the taste and texture of an English novel, and she loved every minute of it, which might explain not only her choice to become an English teacher but also her lifelong addiction to "Masterpiece Theatre." Chat with any longtime fan of "Masterpiece"--an unofficial but tightly bonded club that includes every English teacher she has ever known--and one can draw out a connection to "Masterpiece", past and present. For over 20 years, "Masterpiece" has created print and online resources--written by teachers for teachers, with input from teacher advisory boards--to help middle school and high school educators use "Masterpiece" to enrich their teaching. Even as "Masterpiece" is committed to keeping pace with change, it never seems to lose sight of a central truth: when teachers bring "Masterpiece" into classroom, they give their students the memorable experience they had themselves, whether five, ten, or even 40 years ago, when they first fell in love with "Masterpiece"--the knowing, the insight, and the pleasure that comes from seeing great literature made into great drama.
