In 1971, the year that "Masterpiece Theater" premiered on WGBH, the public television station in Boston, the author's family lived in London for the summer. Even as "Masterpiece" is committed to keeping pace with change, it never seems to lose sight of a central truth: when teachers bring "Masterpiece" into classroom, they give their students the memorable experience they had themselves, whether five, ten, or even 40 years ago, when they first fell in love with "Masterpiece"--the knowing, the insight, and the pleasure that comes from seeing great literature made into great drama.
