Predictive Modeling of Student Performances for Retention and Academic Support in a Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program
Borghese, Peter; Lacey, Sandi
Community College Enterprise, v20 n1 p9-15 Spr 2014
As part of a retention and academic support program, data was collected to develop a predictive model of student performances in core classes in a Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) program. The research goal was to identify students likely to have difficulty with coursework and provide supplemental tutorial support. The focus was on the prediction of student performances in Acoustical Physics and Instrumentation, a class identified as problematic for students. Students' performances on the Measure of the Ability to Form Spatial Mental Imagery (MASMI: Campos, 2009), the Scholastic Level Exam (SLE: Wonderlic, Inc., 2001) and archival classroom performances were used to construct the predictive model using multiple regression. Results show a robust predicative model can be developed for the targeted course and suggest such a methodology might be extended to other outcomes of students' success.
