This study examined the attitudes of undergraduate and graduate nursing students (N=282) towards caring for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) patients. A 57-item Likert type AIDS attitude questionnaire focused on the following questions: (1) Is there a difference in the comfort level of juniors, seniors, or graduate students caring for AIDS patients? (2) Is there a difference in the confidence level of students who have or have not had a course on AIDS? (3) Does the age of an individual affect his/her attitude towards caring for an AIDS patient? (4) Does personal experience of individuals diagnosed with AIDS, make a difference in the student's attitude towards caring for an AIDS patient? Findings revealed that, in general, students had fairly positive attitudes towards caring for AIDS patients. Most students were highly supportive of patients' rights and felt there was insufficient curriculum preparation to adequately care for these clients. Those factors which contributed positively toward feelings of more adequate curriculum preparation were: knowing someone with AIDS; having had a formal AIDS class; having cared for someone with AIDS; and the age of the student.
