Proceedings of the 1979 Meeting [of the] Canadian Mathematics Education Study Group.
These proceedings contain: two lectures; reports from four working groups, four review groups, and three special groups; and a list of participants. Lecture I, by Joseph Agassi, was entitled "On Mathematics Education: The Lakatosian Revolution." Lecture II, by Jack Easley, was entitled "Alternative Research Metaphore and the Social Context of Mathematics." The four working groups, (1) Ratio and Proportion: Study of a Mathematical Concept, (2) Minicalculators and the Mathematics Curriculum, (3) Is There a Mathematical Method, and (4) Topics Suitable for Mathematics Courses for Elementary School Teachers, met at the same times during the meeting for a total of nine hours. The four review groups, (1) Research on Problem Solving, (2) Provincial Objectives for Mathematics Education, (3) Applications of Mathematics for High Schools, and (4) Inservice Courses for Elementary Teachers, were scheduled to meet for two and one-half hours each. Special groups, (1) Self-Education for Mathematics, (2) The Second International Mathematics Study, and (3) MEDIC - The UBC Mathematics Clinic, were ad hoc groups added to the program at the suggestion of the respective leaders.
