Medics in Primary School
Press, Colin
Primary Science Review, n77 p28-29 Mar-Apr 2003
Some time ago a flyer on "Medics in Primary School" came the author's way. It described a programme for making placements in primary schools available to medical students. The benefits of the program to medical students and participating schools were highlighted, including opportunities to develop communication skills and demystify medicine. It sounded interesting, so the author contacted his local medical school, Queen's University Medical School in Belfast, and arranged a meeting. The Medical Education Unit showed enthusiasm for the scheme outlined. The Northern Ireland Electricity agreed to support the project. The programme was formally launched in February 2001. As an outcome, the students showed enthusiasm and positive attitudes, and their communication skills were developed. Teachers benefited from students' knowledge and different approaches, and pupils were enthusiastic about their new experience. They also gained an insight into the medical profession, which may be useful in later career choice.
