"Good for You TV": Using Storyboarding for Health-Related Television Public Service Announcements to Analyze Messages and Influence Positive Health Choices
Cox, Carol
Journal of School Health, v78 n3 p179-183 Mar 2008
Many external and societal factors influence health choices and behaviors, including health-related media messages. What people, especially youth, see and hear in health-related media messages often influences their overall health. Students, highly vulnerable to such messages, need opportunities to become media literate to reduce the effects of unhealthy messages. The media literacy education strategy outlined in this article involves students' creation and production of their own televised messages to promote health-enhancing behaviors in their schools and communities. Students will choose a health concern that is important to them, conduct research on the topic, specify who needs the health information and why they need it, and then create a targeted media message to spread the word to encourage adoption of the healthy behaviors. The television public service announcement (TV PSA) is one of the most common channels used to communicate these health-related messages. With the advent of some new technologies, TV PSAs can be easily developed and produced locally to address specific school or community needs. (Contains 2 figures.)
