This article offers an activity which hopes to illustrate the variety of ways that the media are able to manipulate not just information but also societal understandings of critical issues and events and to connect disparate media and time periods via an activity extended over several weeks. The topic for which this series of activities was developed is both accidental and deliberate distortion of the news and the consequences it has for audience and society. In this activity, three of the six media forms are covered: newspaper, photography, and movie. In discussing news manipulation, the class also get to talk about the nature and needs of people, media's responsibilities to their audience, and ethics. In addition, the topic of censorship was also tackled in class. (Contains 2 footnotes.)
