Using Media to Inspire Unity and Citizenship
Parke, Elaine
Principal Leadership, v5 n8 p31-34 Apr 2005
Despite the call to come together as community to instill citizenship in youth, there is a powerful educator and community member who does not attend school conferences or sit on community building teams--the mass media. The dynamics of daily living have been transformed by the increasing presence of mass media in daily life. This article describes mass media as a constant and powerful force in the lives of students and adults. It also suggests that educators and the community must build a strategy to use the influence of mass media in a healthy way. Schools can use the principles of mass communication to make positive messages more powerful. Media appeals to all children and especially to teens who are typically resistant to values messages delivered by adults in the classroom or at home. One reason that this electronic nonresident is a strong influence on youth is because they do not perceive the media as authoritarian. Integration is a current educational buzzword to describe the shared use of program content across educational disciplines or the practice of combining social objectives with educational content, such as including a service learning component in social studies curricula. Using the same concept, educational messages and images that are integrated and simultaneously delivered can provoke thought and motivation. A consistent visual message in a comprehensive system can teach students desirable character and civic traits.
