The most common approach to treating male perpetrators of domestic violence has been batterer intervention programs (BIPs) (Aldarondo & Mederos, 2002). In particular, the use of group treatment modalities is due to theoretically-based assumptions that the group treatment context is best for male resocialization, and the most cost effective (Dutton & Sonkin, 2002; Gondolf, 2002). Researchers have purported that BIP treatment groups may be effective in reducing the degree of partner violence towards women (e.g., Brewster, Milner, Mollerstrom, Saha, & Harris, 2002; Gondolf, 2002), while others suggest that BIP treatment has negligible effectiveness regarding recidivism rates and perpetrator reports of abuse (e.g., Babcock, Green, & Robie, 2004; U.S. Preventative Task Force, 2004).
