Celebrating the Bicentennial of Lewis and Clark
Morris, Ronald V.; McNeely, Jean
Social Studies, v96 n1 p24 Jan-Feb 2005
Lewis, Clark, and the Corps of Discovery traveled westward from 1803 to 1806; therefore, the bicentennial of the expedition is being celebrated from 2003 until 2006. Students and teachers celebrating the bicentennial and Jefferson's Louisiana Purchase in 1803 can use social studies classes to help them connect with their community and to reach a wider audience. One community combined school and university resources to support its celebration of the bicentennial. The schools worked together to develop resources that they later shared with the community in an intergenerational demonstration project. The purpose of the project was to help families learn together, and the school became a place where entire families and members of the community did that. Consequently, students saw that people of all ages, not only those enrolled in school, continue learning. Representatives from the school and the local university organized the projects and assisted teachers. The five lessons included in this article illustrate five content strands of the bicentennial celebration. The content of the five lessons will help teachers and students understand that the events are a part of world history and can serve as a means to include race, culture, politics, society, industry, and transportation. They provide a flexible framework to help teachers determine how to teach about the Lewis and Clark expedition. Appendix A contains an inventory of Thomas Jefferson Artifacts. Appendix B is a list and summary of Jefferson's Primary Documents, and Appendix C consists of a student time line for study.
