What Can the Aesthetic Movement Tell Us about Aesthetic Education?
Kjeldsen, Jette
Journal of Aesthetic Education, v35 n1 p85-97 Spr 2001
In this article, the author presents two quotations from Walter Pater which suggest a provoking and demanding recipe by which to live one's aesthetic life and point out where all aesthetic education must begin. The author also exemplifies Walter Pater's ideas through two works by the painter James McNeill Whistler and the poet Algernon Swinburne and suggests how the Aesthetic Movement can be an inspiration to aesthetic education today in its emphasis on individual response and, more widely, on the democratization of aesthetic experience.
