Readiness in the Basal Reader: An Update.
Perkins, Pamela
A study examined two 1989 basal reading series' (published by McGraw Hill and Holt) readiness/priming sequences in order to ascertain the theoretical bases of each and then compared the findings with those of an earlier study. All pages of the readiness/priming sequence student texts and workbooks of both basal reading series were analyzed using the Program Profile Continuum Survey of Readiness in the Basal Reader. Results indicated that the readiness/priming sequences provided with basal reading series focus predominantly on the grapho-phonic cueing system, ignoring the semantic, syntactic, and pragmatic cueing systems required by the psycholinguistic theory of reading. Results also indicated that regardless of the use of such terms as "emergent literacy" in the philosophical and merchandizing statements, publishers of basal series continue with the word recognition practices of viewing letters and sounds of letters as prerequisites to reading.
