Developments in Mathematical Education: Proceedings of the Second International Congress on Mathematical Education.
Howson, A. G., Ed.
It is the aim of this book to transmit to its readers something of the general spirit of the proceedings of the Second International Congress on Mathematical Education. Nine invited papers were presented by distinguished educators and psychologists from many different countries. Thirty-eight working committees prepared papers and reports on a wide range of topics. Among the topics explored were instruction and curriculum at all levels of education, teacher education, the psychology of mathematical learning, assessment in mathematics, mathematics and language, mathematics in developing countries, and computers and calculators. The invited papers are contained in their entirety along with seven papers selected from those produced through the working committees. George Polya, Jean Piaget and Edith Biggs are among those whose papers are included. A review is given of two special reports on Papy's Centre Belge de Pedagogie de la Mathematique (CBPM) and the Comprehensive School Mathematics Program (CSMP) of CEMREL. Summaries of the committee reports are also included in this document. (JP)
