Development of Computer Aids for Tape-Control of Photocomposing Machines. Final Report, Section A. Mechanization of Mathematical Reviews Office Procedures.
American Mathematical Society, Providence, RI.
This document is the first of three sections of a final report on a project which included five phases: (1) developing systems and procedures for the use of computer-processed tape, (2) design of a system for the partial mechanization of Mathematical Reviews office procedures together with experiments on derived publications, (3) typographic design, (4) extension of a system of preparing computer-processed tape to include the setting of displays including multiple-line equations, and (5) a test of the combined system. This document reports feasibility studies concerning the development of effective input techniques, that organization and management of computer files, the production of useful output from computer files, and the costs of such production, plus a discussion of implementation and possible applications, including the creation of a master file of bibliographic data dn the mechanization of the Mathematical Reviews Cumulative Index. The fourteen exhibits include examples of system input and output. An 18-page "Manual for Input Keying" is appended. (JW)
