"What Works" Reviewers Find No Learning Edge for Leading Math Texts
Viadero, Debra
Education Week, v26 n20 p1, 21 Jan 2007
In the recent textbook review by the federal What Works Clearinghouse, only one out of four elementary school math programs has received even a qualified nod from evaluators for its research record. The result shows that most major commercial textbooks can not yet muster the proof that they are any better than their competitors at improving student achievement. This article describes how textbook publishers responded in the challenge to improve the effectiveness of math programs for the elementary grades.
