A Handle on Hands-On
Schiller, Ellen; Joseph, Jann; Konecki, Loretta
Science and Children, v41 n9 p30-32 Jul-Aug 2004
Ask any elementary teacher to discuss the obstacles they face when trying to implement inquiry-based science teaching and you?re sure to hear hands-on materials mentioned. Where to get supplies and how to pay for them, how to organize and store the materials, and how to distribute the materials efficiently during the lessons are constant challenges in the elementary classroom. This article has been organized into two areas: (1) Managing materials for schoolwide sharing; and (2) managing materials in the classroom. Of course, teachers should not feel restricted by these classifications. There are numerous ways to organize materials to meet specific needs-the main point is the organizing. With this critical step underway, inquiry-based science teaching really is manageable.
