Helping Children Grow Up in the 90's: A Resource Book for Parents and Teachers.
National Association of School Psychologists, Silver Spring, MD.
This resource book was created to address many of the areas that place children at risk for educational and social failure. It consists of handouts and fact sheets that educators and psychologists can photocopy and distribute to parents, teachers, and other educators so that they can more broadly understand and address some of the situations that children confront. Part I of the book deals with a variety of developmental issues for children and adolescents having to do with: career and decision making, communicable diseases, creativity, dependency, different cultural backgrounds, hearing, homosexuality, humor, language development, maladaptive habits, masturbation, nailbiting, obesity, perception of time, prejudice, prematurity, religion, responsibility, sexual interest, shyness, sleepwalking, stress, temperament, and thumbsucking. Part II focuses on getting along with peers and others, and includes sections on anger control, assertiveness, competition, peer relations, and self-control. Part III discusses parenting and how parents can help their children and adolescents grow and develop. Part IV considers ways to bridge the gap in the home-school connection. Part V considers a variety of emotional and behavioral problems of children and adolescents. Part VI offers suggestions for helping children and adolescents adapt to life crises and changes. Part VII contains a number of fact sheet on such topics as adoption, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, bullying, divorce, dropouts, early childhood primary prevention programs for emotional and behavioral problems, grade retention, multicultural and minority issues, self-esteem, and sexual abuse prevention programs.
