The Socio-Sexual Knowledge and Attitudes Test was designed to measure the attitudes and knowledge of retarded individuals in fourteen areas: (1) anatomy/terminology; (2) dating; (3) marriage; (4) intimacy; (5) intercourse; (6) pregnancy, childbirth and childrearing; (8) masturbation; (9) homosexuality; (10) alcohol and drugs; (11) community risks and hazards; (12) birth control; (13) venereal disease; and (14) terminology. Test items involved what was understood by the subject, whether the subject felt positively or negatively toward particular socio-sexual practices, and how much the subject felt he or she knew about the area. Pictures were used to call attention to socio-sexual areas and to illustrate multiple-choice answer options which subjects could point to in response to questions. The test was administered to 199 mildly, moderately, and severely retarded adults; 99 were residents in a state institution and 100 were living with parents or in group homes. Statistical analyses were conducted to establish the test-retest reliability, internal consistency, and validity of the instrument. Results indicated that women were more knowledgeable than men on items pertaining to menstruation, pregnancy, and birth control; and that institutional residents were the most positive with respect to marriage and parenthood. Institutionalized males were the least knowledgeable of the groups. Overall responses were stable for knowledge and attitude, but subjects were less certain about how much they knew. (Author/JAC)
