Media Images: Do They Influence College Students' Body Image?
Hill, Gina Jarman
Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, v101 n2 p28-32 2009
Body image perception and body mass index (BMI) among college students exposed and not exposed to photographs of models were compared. Classes were assigned to receive a presentation with or without photographs of models incorporated. Students (n = 184) completed a survey about body/weight satisfaction, height, weight, and the Contour Drawing Rating Scale. Neither body size perceptions nor BMI values were significantly different between groups whether or not exposed to the photographs. Men and women differed regarding body satisfaction regardless of exposure to the photographs. Brief exposure did not influence body image perceptions among this population. It is important that family and consumer sciences professionals understand the impact of mass media images on perceptions of body satisfaction and health behaviors. (Contains 1 table.)
