The major societal trends happening in Alberta, Canada, have an impact on educational effectiveness in the region. Statistics are provided in the areas of demographics, family and society, Alberta's youth, labor force, and advances in science and technology. The section on demographics includes data on population growth, births, fertility rates, preschool population, school-age population, non-school-age adult population, aging population, rural-urban distribution, migration/immigration, and native population and fertility rates. Topics in the section on family include family size, husband-wife and single parent families with and without children at home, abortions, marriages and divorces, family income, social assistance and poverty, female lone parenthood, and educational attainment of the over-15 population. Young offenders, teen sexuality, teen pregnancy, substance use and treatment, and suicides are highlighted in the Alberta's youth section. Labor force participation by marital status and sex, part-time employment, and unemployment are highlighted in the labor force section. The science and technology section cites the growing use of computers and other information technology in Canada, while a final section notes the continuing importance of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, including minority language educational rights. Space is provided for user notes on implications a particular trend or trends may have on his or her operation.
