The Developing Child Sub-Committee of the Australian International Year of the Child Committee of Non-Government Organizations prepared papers on the main problems facing children from birth to 12 years of age. Topics designated for attention were (1) the parenting role, including the influence of parents on children, factors influencing parental care, and support systems necessary for parenting and protecting the parental role; (2) motivation in children's learning; (3) children at physical risk; (4) children at psychological risk; (5) moral development of children; (6) improving the nutrition of children; and (7) support services necessary for parents and other relatives of chronically ill and handicapped children. Eleven papers were produced: "What Parents and Family Mean to the Child,""Marriage and the Family,""Pressures on Australian Parents Rearing Children,""Parents without Partners,""Education towards Successful Parenthood: A Pediatrician's Viewpoint,""Support Services Necessary for Parents and Other Family Members Who Have Sick and Handicapped Children,""Nutrition and the Development of the Child,""Home Motivation on Children's Learning,""Morality and the Moral Development of the Child: Some Considerations,""The Child at Physical Risk," and "Some Issues Relating to Sexual Abuse of Children." Also included in the collection are the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of the Child and a statement on corporal punishment in educational settings. (RH)
