Strategies Reported by Career Services Directors to Increase Freshmen Usage of Career Services
Reitter, Kimberly
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Saint Louis University
Because of the importance of early usage of career counseling and other services offered by career services centers, students should begin using these services during their freshman year. While research has shown some correlation between marketing messages and students' intentions to use career services, no research has been done to identify which marketing efforts actually increase freshmen usage of career services. The purpose of this study was to look at current strategies that university career services centers used to increase freshmen usage of career services and to identify which strategies have been successful in increasing freshmen usage of career services centers. A 28-question survey was sent to 202 Midwestern college and university career services directors. The services available to all students as well as specific services used by freshmen were determined. The project also discovered which strategies were used to increase freshmen usage of career services. Lastly, the survey cross-tabulated the attitudes of career services directors towards freshmen usage of career services with increased usage to discover any correlation between these two variables. This study looked at the aspects of career services, their ideas about working with freshmen, and the context in which successful strategies were used to increase freshmen usage of career services centers. This study sought to identify strategies from career services centers and gives ideas to increase freshmen usage as well as implications for career services centers.
