Godat, Meredith
Journal of Educational Multimedia and Hypermedia, v16 n1 p67-84 Jan 2007
Workplace learning in a crisis-rich environment is often difficult if not impossible to integrate into programs so that students are able to experience and apply crisis management practices and principles. This study presents the results of a pilot project that examined the effective use of a virtual reality (VR) environment as a tool to teach high-order generic skills in two units, MGB210 Production and Service Management and AMB352 Marketing Decision Making. The pilot study was conducted in collaboration with the Faculty of Business, the High Performance Computing and Research Support Division of IT (HPC), Faculty of Built Environment and Engineering (BEE) and the Faculty of Education. Students take on the roles of supervisors, managers and marketing decision makers in a crisis-rich environment within the context of a virtual corporation, Virtual Golden Foods Corporation (VGFC). This paper describes the potential for VGFC and its factory to be learning and teaching tools around which problem based learning scenarios are used across various Business disciplines such as business management, marketing, human resources and economics for both small and large student cohorts. Decisions and actions are made in real time within a risky but safe environment.
