Assessments are not ends in themselves as Suskie (2002) noted. Their purpose is to indicate how effectively educational programs are meeting their goals for student learning. This paper reviews assessment data from the North Carolina Vocational Competency Achievement Tracking System (VoCATS) for business and marketing education to examine student performance in business and marketing education. The results show that Business Education is making satisfactory progress, with an average of 71.4 percent of students passing their courses. In marketing education the performance level is much lower--52.6 percent. The findings also revealed significant improvement in 2002 scores over 2001. However, there are several low-enrollment courses that may be draining resources and might best be dropped from the curricula.
