Physicians in the Academic Marketplace.
Burke, Dolores L.
This book explores the medical professoriate, in particular medical faculty mobility in and out of academic positions as it relates to the organization of academic medicine in United States universities. The work is based on interviews conducted with 300 faculty members in six major medical schools over a period of 6 months in late 1988 and early 1989. Their views constitute the major portion of the book, chapters 2 through 5. Chapter 2 provides an introduction to the market place, investigating the internal and external environment of the academic medicine organization. Chapter 3 examines the medical faculty recruitment process, exploring the organizational justification for a faculty position, the criteria established for identifying and screening candidates, and the conduct of a search. Chapter 4 deals with questions of choice in the perpetuation of the faculty and of individual and organizational decisions and circumstances connected with joining the organization. Chapter considers the choice to leave the organization. The final chapter summarizes the study findings on faculty mobility in the context of academic medicine and the future. Included are three appendixes detailing methodology, study data and medical specialties and subspecialties, an index and a 62-item bibliography. (JB)
