Invest in Financial Literacy
Bush, Sarah B.; McGatha, Maggie B.; Bay-Williams, Jennifer M.
Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, v17 n6 p358-365 Feb 2012
The current state of the economy elevates the need to build awareness of financial markets and personal finance among the nation's young people through implementing a financial literacy curriculum in schools. A limited amount of time spent on financial literacy can have a positive effect on students' budgeting skills. This knowledge will only add to the educational research and learning theory that support the need to make mathematics grounded in contexts, culturally relevant, and focused on enrichment versus remediation. Financial literacy can be infused into the curriculum in a number of ways: In classroom lessons covering content that is appropriate for a teacher's grade and students, in after-school programs, or in warm-up activities. Making connections, fostering reasoning skills, and promoting mathematical practices all point to the need for mathematics to be relevant and applicable.
