Localization: A Career for the New Millennium
Gibbs, Hope J.
Techniques: Connecting Education and Careers, v79 n8 p30-32 Nov-Dec 2004
Founded in 2000, the Localization Generalist Certificate Program at Austin Community College (ACC) was the recipient of the 2004 ClientSide Excellence Award in the category of Localization Educational Services. It is the only community college program of its kind and one of only a handful of programs worldwide. What is localization and why is it significant? Localization is the adaptation of the products and services--often software, websites and web services--to meet the requirements of international markets. Companies hire people with localization skills to adapt language and culture that must be "localized," or made familiar, to a specific local market. In this article, Dr. Tim Altanero, an associate professor of foreign languages and the program director (and founder) of Austin Community College's localization program explains why this type of program is relevant and what makes it one of the fastest growing fields in high technology. Although Austin is the only community college to have such a program at present, it is a strong probability that more localization programs will be developed across the nation.
