A Statewide Survey of Drug and Alcohol Use among California Students in Grades 7, 9, and 11: Report to Attorney General John K. Van de Kamp, Winter 1985-1986.
Skager, Rodney; And Others
As a first attempt in the State of California to determine the nature and extent of drug and alcohol use by students in the state's secondary schools, a survey of drug and alcohol use was completed by 7,379 7th, 9th, and 11th grade students enrolled in public secondary schools in California. This report summarizes the findings of the survey. The goals of the survey are presented and the population and samples are defined. The questionnaire is discussed in detail, and data preparation is explained. Descriptive findings of the survey are presented in two areas. The first area, Use of Alcohol and Other Drugs, examines frequency of use; polydrug use; first drug of intoxication; cigarette smoking; and age of first alcohol use, alcohol intoxication, other drug use, and other drug intoxication. The second area, Environmental Influences and Student Attitudes, examines adult use of alcohol and other drugs, perceptions of parents' attitudes about alcohol versus marijuana, acceptance of regular use by friends, grade 7 perceptions of best friends' drinking/using, sources of knowledge about drugs, where students get drugs, and reasons for using and not using alcohol and drugs. The next section of the report discusses prevention education. Differences between types of prevention education, regional differences, and differences between ethnic groups are also explored. Thirty-two data tables are included; relevant forms used in the study are appended. (NB)
