On Your Mark! Get Set! Go!
Rowland, Veronica
Montessori Life: A Publication of the American Montessori Society, v18 n4 p18-19 2006
This article describes how second- and third-grade students joined their teacher, Mary Ann McTiernan, a marathon runner from Cape Town, South Africa, in a one-mile run every Thursday morning while she was training. Mary Ann's students had been asking, "Where do you run?" "How far do you go?" "How fast can you run?" "Can we run with you?" Mary Ann took advantage of the children's interest and sent home permission forms to parents. Everyone agreed it was a great idea and Thursday morning one-mile jogs became part of the weekly curriculum. Although running was a rewarding activity, Mary Ann wanted to give her students something more tangible for their efforts. She researched information about local marathons that offered "kid race" options, but these were short sideline activities, separate from the adult event. Mary Ann wanted her students to have an authentic racing experience. The Carlsbad Marathon sponsors agreed to let Mary Ann and her students run during the actual marathon event.
