The Laboratory: A Place to Investigate.
Thornton, John W., Ed.
The contributors to this volume take the position that the undergraduate biology laboratory should be a place where students conduct their own investigations rather than follow recipes supplied by the instructor. The first part of the collection discusses the need for this reform, with special consideration given to both majors and nonmajors. A case for using this form of laboratory experience is argued on social and general educational grounds. A short history of the development of the use of investigative undergraduate laboratories in the United States, and some comments on its present status, conclude this part. Part II contains descriptions of thirteen selected programs in a range of institutions and course types. Part III includes descriptions of two laboratory curricula separated from the lecture instruction, including comments on the continual evolution of these programs. The final part contains seven articles concerning aspects of implementation of such programs by authors with experience in the area. Mane of the papers included have been previously published in CUEBS News or BioScience. (AL)
