Manatee County Displaced Homemakers Program. Final Report from July 1, 1983 to August 31, 1984.
Joynes, Margot
In the Displaced Homemaker project at the New Options Center in Manatee County, Bradenton, Florida, clients were displaced homemakers, single household heads needing training, homemakers seeking full-time employment, and anyone interested in jobs or training nontraditional to his/her sex. Various outreach methods--public service announcements, brochures, personal appearances--were tested. Through personal interviews the client's needs were identified and recorded on an Intake Questionnaire and/or daily contact log. All clients received information and referral services. Efforts were made to stabilize those clients in crisis using other applicable community support services. Career guidance, job search techniques, and employability skills training were offered through workshops and individual counseling to clients seeking immediate employment. After initial occupational counseling, clients with financial support were introduced to vocational training opportunities and referred to the appropriate vocational counselor. Most clients initially took entry-level employment with low wages. Some took specific vocational training with staff assistance in locating financial aid. Findings were that former clients returned as needs changed, all clients came with the same basic needs, and client need for short-term vocational training is still unmet.
