Edginton, Christopher R.; Hudson, Susan D.; Scholl, Kathleen G.
Sagamore Publishing LLC
This third edition of "Leadership for Recreation, Parks, and Leisure Services" is unique from many different perspectives. The current effort of this book is focused on bringing together a number of interrelated elements that influence leadership in recreation, parks, and leisure service organizations. Thus, the authors have focused the effort on three important elements contributing to the interactive process of leadership. The first part of the book discusses of the work of leaders and includes presentation of theoretical and foundational information. The second part focuses on leaders in groups. Finally, the third part is dedicated to leadership elements in a number of recreation, parks, and leisure service settings. This book also features many distinctive pedagological elements. The authors have identified learning objectives and key terms at the beginning of each chapter. This will be useful in helping students focus their attention to the intent of each chapter. In addition, the authors have included within each chapter marginal quotations featuring perspectives from notable individuals. These quotations will provide heightened awareness and understanding of the subject matter. Each chapter is concluded with discussion questions, a case study, and experiential learning experiences from which students can explore and analyze their own thinking, engage in problem-solving strategies, and reflect upon their own thinking regarding leadership. This book is organized into three parts. Part one, The Leader, contains the following chapters: (1) The Language of Leadership; (2) Leadership: Basic Concepts and Theories; and (3) Leadership Roles. Part two, The Group, contains the next chapters: (4) Leadership across the Lifespan; (5) The Dynamics of Leadership in Groups; (6) Leadership and Motivation; and (7) Leadership and Communication. Part three, The Setting, contains the final chapters of the book: (8) Managing Risks; (9) Leadership in Outdoor and Aquatic Leisure Settings; (10) Leadership in Social Settings; and (11) Leadership and Event Management.
