An Essay on the Teaching of Leadership to Undergraduates in Business Schools
Kosicek, Paul Michael
Education, Knowledge & Economy: A Journal for Education and Social Enterprise, v2 n1 p67-73 Mar 2008
Business schools across the United States since the late 1800s have taught accounting concepts, business tactics, and management skills in their predominately management-oriented core curricula. They strive to provide students with an effective toolbox designed to improve market share and the bottom line. The teaching of management exposes the student to analytical skills for problem solving, task master efficiency, and the importance of schedules and directing employees to follow them. However, there appears to be a dichotomy within the business education community: many academicians believe business schools need refurbishment; some see a need to revisit the historic, broader approach; others see the need for greater technical expertise. Whether utilizing the classical approach of previous years or the more modern methodology, are undergraduate business students exposed sufficiently to the attributes of leadership and the responsibilities of being a leader in the world of business? Effective leaders are inspirational, influential, visionaries, strong communicators, and trustworthy. More than just exposure, the undergraduate business student must be made to understand the responsibilities of being a leader. (Contains 1 figure.)
