It is increasingly important for timber companies to train managers in the principles and practices of sustainable forest management. One of the most effective ways to conduct such training is through use of visual training methods. This is partly because visual representations encode large amounts of information and help learners to grasp relationships among variables quickly. By providing realistic visual representations of conditions and situations, visual training approaches also help to increase the perceived connection to reality of the material to be learned, which is highly desirable from cognitivist and constructivist learning standpoints. Four visual training methods for sustainable forest management are described: site visitation, video presentations, computer-assisted learning with visuals, and use of whiteboards. Suggestions are made for getting maximum value from each of these approaches.
