In the wake of 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, and the Virginia Tech shooting tragedy, it is no surprise that concern for students' safety is the primary reason attributed to parents' increased involvement. Parents and university administrators share in their commitment to student safety. However, college and university staff who assume responsibility for campus crisis management often leave parents out of the information loop when it comes to their crisis plans. Understanding parent expectations during times of crisis, educating both students and families about university support and response efforts, and communicating effectively to families during a crisis situation are all critical to successful crisis management. This article discusses the importance of understanding parents when responding to crises. The author provides an introduction to crisis management and offers recommendations for assisting families in crisis preparations.
