Malaria.
Dupasquier, Isabelle
Children in the Tropics, n178 1989
Malaria, the greatest pandemia in the world, claims an estimated one million lives each year in Africa alone. While it may still be said that for the most part malaria is found in what is known as the world's poverty belt, cases are now frequently diagnosed in western countries. Due to resistant strains of malaria which have developed because of exposure to drugs and insecticides, the incidence of the disease is rising substantially throughout the world. The development of strains resistant to drugs in humans beings has put an end to previously effective treatment strategies. Mosquito resistance to DDT and the other organochlorines and organophosphorus compounds put an end to a one-sided campaign to eradicate malaria. This journal issue provides up-to-date information on the disease and guidelines for therapeutic interventions. An editorial and introduction establish contexts for discussions of epidemiology, immunity, clinical signs, antimalarial drugs, drug resistance, prophylaxis, and treatment. Concluding remarks focus on prospects for controlling the disease in the future. Resources for further reading are listed. (RH)
