The National Federation of Families for Children's Mental Health
Brown, Corey
Reclaiming Children and Youth, v20 n3 p15-16 2011
This article outlines the mission and vision of the National Federation of Families for Children's Mental Health and its history and accomplishments in the family movement. It gives examples of how the National Federation is leading the way for positive, collaborative, and engaging training; as well as research and advocacy. Five core principles guide the National Federation. Children and youth with emotional, behavioral, and mental health challenges: (1) have strengths and make valuable contributions to their families; (2) are people first and deserve the same love, care, and attention as any other person; (3) have a right to safely participate in community life, live with their families, and attend school; (4) come from diverse backgrounds and must be treated with dignity and respect; and (5) must receive all the services and supports necessary to achieve their potential. In addition, the National Federation has offered families the chance to develop their leadership skills through three main objectives: policy, research and evaluation, and systems transformation. Families are able to identify, define, and advocate for a national policy agenda. They educate national policy makers about issues affecting children and youth and participate in establishing and implementing public policies that produce better outcomes for young people and their families. The National Federation trains families and youth to use research and evaluation to transform systems. It also trains researchers and evaluators to partner with families and youth, impacting research agendas and evaluation with real-life expertise.
