The University of Nevada System Planning Report, 1989-1993: Future Directions for Nevada's Colleges and Universities.
Nevada Univ. System, Reno.
Representing the University of Nevada System's (UNS) plans for public higher education in Nevada for the four-year period from 1989 to 1993, this report discusses what the Board of Regents considers to be the major higher education issues in the state. Chapter I discusses the record 56% increase in enrollment in UNS schools from 1976 to 1986; the inadequacy of current funding formulas to meet the need for new academic programs, faculty resources, and new facilities; and issues of access and educational quality. Chapter II contains enrollment projections, focusing on trends related to high school graduates, nontraditional students, minority students, and UNS enrollment forecasts through 2001. This chapter also considers means of financing the expected 7% annual systemwide growth, describing the UNS biennial budget request, the current funding formula, and capital construction needs. After chapter III discusses the academic plans and priorities of each UNS community college and university campus, chapter IV discusses the challenge of maintaining student access to higher education in diverse forms. Chapter V examines goals related to the pursuit of educational quality, considering issues of faculty salaries, university entrance requirements, performance evaluation, educational outcomes, and research. In chapter VI, higher education's role in meeting the needs of the state is discussed in terms of needs for economic development, health care education, educational research, computing and new technology, and educational telecommunications. A chart showing degrees offered by college is appended. (AAC)
