Immigrants and Refugees: The Caribbean and South Florida. Occasional Papers Series, Dialogues #2.
Florida International Univ., Miami. Latin American and Caribbean Center.
Six papers on Caribbean immigrants and refugees in south Florida are presented in this document. Their titles (and authors) are: (1) "Let's Welcome the Refugees" (Bryan O. Walsh); (2) "The Haitians and America's 'Pull'" (Anthony P. Maingot); (3) "Estimates of Haitian International Migration for the 1950-1980 Period" (James Allman); (4) "West Indian Migration: Historical Notes and Contemporary Trends" (Dawn I. Marshall); (5) "The 'Freedom Flotilla' Cuban Emigrants" (Robert L. Bach); and (6) "International Migration and Refugees: The Caribbean, South Florida and the Northeast" (Maingot). The first two papers, representing different perspectives on the immigration issue, originally appeared in the "Miami Herald" and elicited wide community response. The next three papers were presented at a 1980 conference on international migration and refugees. The sixth paper (by Anthony P. Maingot) reports on private sessions held with the United States Coordinator of Refugee Affairs. (KH)
