This article features South Texas High School for Health Professions in Mercedes, Texas. With the support and encouragement of their parents and siblings, students choose to attend South Texas High School for Health Professions, because it offers a way out of poverty through a rigorous education with a strong occupational career component. South Texas, which is known as Med High among students and staff members, has an open enrollment policy and offers intense college preparatory and college-level course-work, supplemented by concentrated medical-based vocational experiences. With a student population that is 80% Hispanic and two-thirds female, South Texas defies the stereotype that Hispanic parents want their daughters to forsake education to stay with the family. When students graduate from South Texas, which is one of four magnet high schools in the South Texas Independent School District (STISD), they are fully prepared for college and ready to pursue an occupation as a health professional. The success of STISD and South Texas is a testament to the dedication and commitment of an entire community.
