Variable Temperature Equipment for a Commercial Magnetic Susceptibility Balance
Lotz, Albert
Journal of Chemical Education, v85 n1 p107-108 Jan 2008
Variable temperature equipment for the magnetic susceptibility balance MSB-MK1 of Sherwood Scientific, Ltd., is described. The sample temperature is controlled with streaming air heated by water in a heat exchanger. Whereas the balance as sold commercially can be used only for room temperature measurements, the setup we designed extends the temperature range from 20 [degree]C to 80 [degree]C in spite of the very narrow gap of the magnet. Aside from a recirculating water thermostat and a compressed air supply, all other parts of the variable temperature equipment are inexpensive, easily available, and can be put together without professional technical assistance. The performance of the balance in the temperature range provided is not worse than that at room temperature, as demonstrated by measurements with four magnetic standards. (Contains 2 figures, 1 table and 4 notes.)
